让 (ràng) suggests or indicates there exists a causal relationship between two matters. Originally 让 means “let”, “ask” or “permit” as in
- 请你让我过去。Please let me pass.
- 妈妈不让我和妹妹喝酒。Mom does not permit me and my sister to drink alcohol.
- 爸爸让我把饭吃了再出去玩。Dad asked me to finish eating and then go have fun.
But 让 also appears between two things or events to suggest a causal relation.
- 我的朋友昨天晚上说的话让我的女朋友很不高兴。
- 每天吃那么多东西会让你的身体越来越胖。
- 他昨晚打电话打了5个多钟头，让我一晚上都没睡觉。
- You call her so often, she feels you like her.
- The snow (雪❄️) on the road slows the traffic. (车)
- The cold war (冷战) between America and China makes fewer people want to study Chinese.
- Jinghe goes to college in Beijing, and the deaf-mute has more chance to be Nuan.
- She didn’t call last night, mom was very worried (着急).
- Because there is no a/c in the building, few people want to live here in summer.
- It’s not cheap to buy a house in the city, people commute (坐公共汽车) to work.
- Seeing Nuan standing by the brook (小河), Jinghe recalls (想起) his childhood.
